“Eye Study” (iPad sketch, Made With Paper) by Sam Spratt

Messing around with the Paper app on the iPad for about an hour or so. Again, really not a fan of the iPad’s limitations when it comes to drawing, but ‘Paper’ makes it really quite enjoyable. Highly recommended.

The Excuse ›

samspratt:

You’ve heard it before.

It’s been said by parents, friends, teachers, role models, athletes, celebrities, and maybe even yourself at some point or another. It has manifested itself into a series of popular quotes, even more popular corporate slogans, and is related to universally, even if we don’t live by it. “No excuses”, “Just do it”, “Impossible is nothing”, “My limits are limitless”, and countless other iterations of the same concept are commonplace for advertisers and the ambitious alike.

However, at every turn… we don’t do it, things do feel impossible, we reach our limits, and we craft ourselves an obstacle in the form of “the excuse”.

We cite things like “lack of time”, “bad timing”, “it’s too hard”, “my race or socioeconomic class holds me back”, “I’m not ready”, “You don’t get it, you don’t understand how I feel”, or “I’m too ugly”.

I’m not going to tell you that those things don’t matter, they do. They are real problems,  real things to feel and real things to face. I’m not going to guilt you either. Sure, there will always be starving kids in third-world countries who have it worse than you, this isn’t about that. The problems we face in life can’t just be dismissed because that dreadlocked chick in the Occupy march told you that they were “Soooo first world problems, man”. Instead, I’m going to point you to a man who moves me—yes, as an artist—but even more so, as a human being. He was one of the first painters whose work I fell in love with, but he is also a human reminder of the value of life and our capacity for greatness. Just watch. Then think.

“Paint ALL THE Memes” by Sam Spratt

2.5 hour speed-painting video:

My… twisted/”realistic” take on Allie Brosh’s hilarious and well-known “Clean all the things” meme—painting it how I see it rather than what it is probably supposed to be. All credit to the original character design goes to http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/  (My sincerest apologies for mutilating your creation, Allie). Music by the amazing Sarah Winters:

Oh how I adore Sam Spratt! Oh how I adore Hyperbole And A Half! This is just the perfect combo <3

“Eye Study” ~1hr sketch timelapse by Sam Spratt

This is my very first video…ever and I suppose there is a bit of “stage fright” that goes along with that. I realized that the general public are not my old professors, family, or friends, and haven’t seen the process behind my many portraits, creatures, rage faces, and other illustrations—thus, I’m opening up the inner circle to you so that you can see how I make the odd things that I do. I figured I would begin with realism and graduate to weirder and more complex things in future videos. Oh and that mind-blowingly amazing cover of Kanye you’re hearing? That’s by the amazing, Sarah Winters

“Portrait of Alexander McQueen” - by Sam Spratt

I’m not much for fashion. I have a passing appreciation for it—but outside of the occasional project runway episode I got roped into by ex-girlfriends, It’s pretty foreign territory. However, yesterday, I “tumbl’d” upon some of his work and postmortem exhibits (which I had seen before, but never in depth), and went down a rabbit-hole of research pouring over what I can only describe as works of art.  It was a pretty experimental portrait, studying and trying to imagine visual elements from his garments/designs into something of a surreal painting—favoring expression/form over traditional likeness.

Even if you don’t give two shits about fashion, I recommend googling “alexander mcqueen savage beauty”—sorta mind-blowing.

How to Survive a Hurricane Power Outage as a Digital Artist

I hate fear-mongering and all this NYC “end of the world” preparation is nonsense. That said, I did use it as an excuse to assemble my own emergency art kit in the event of a hurricane power outage and I am forced to put down the Wacom and Photoshop for a bit. As crazy as it sounds, this could be my first time drawing with pencil & paper in over a year. Now I just need a small hammer and a glass case to put this stuff in that says “Break glass in the event of a digital art emergency!”.

Though it will probably only effect a few, what are you all doing to survive Irene?

Ha!

“Sarah Winters” - June Female Portrait Contest Winner

Unknowingly, the female winner of my contest turned out to be a singer and song writer. I am making no exaggeration whatsoever when I say that Sarah has one of the most chill-inducing phenomenal voices I have ever heard. As a result, I opted to make this portrait evolve while listening to her album rather than having something in mind ahead of time.

You’ve simply gotta hear this girl, She’s got a free download of her cover of Taio Cruz’s “Dynamite” that will leave you pondering the universe: http://swinters.tumblr.com/post/1607162607

If you like this painting, do follow me on tumblr (I follow back almost every person that follows me for the sake of not missing out on potential inspiration), or for the latest, I run a mean facebook artist’s page and a musing-filled twitter

“RIP Amy Winehouse” - by Sam Spratt

Yet another example of a troubled yet talented human being who was berated and bashed for years and only upon death was she treated like a human being. A little more kindness from the world and the media while alive—may have made all of the difference. I took this as a chance to not just pay tribute but also make it very clear that no matter how troubled a person may be, praising them at death doesn’t make the ridicule during life suddenly “ok”. Back to black, Ms. Winehouse.
